Production

Sunflower oil is extracted from sunflower seeds and is produced in many parts of the world. Europe is the largest producer, and the oil is in high demand in developing countries.

Composition

Sunflower oil is 100% fat and contains monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as vitamin E, vitamin K, and natural antioxidants. It’s low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and doesn’t contain protein, carbs, or sodium. Sunflower oil with more oleic acid has more monounsaturated fat and less polyunsaturated fat.

Uses

Sunflower oil is a common edible oil used for cooking, salad dressings, and margarine. It’s also valued for its frying performance and light taste.

Health benefits

Sunflower oil may have several health benefits, including:
• Heart disease: High-oleic acid sunflower oil may reduce the risk of heart disease.
• Cholesterol: Sunflower oil may reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol levels.
• Cell protection: Vitamin E, a fat-soluble nutrient found in sunflower oil, protects cells from age-related damage.

Other considerations

However, some studies suggest that eating too much linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid found in sunflower oil, may increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, certain cancers, dementia, migraines, and other chronic pains.
